Our colleagues, our neighbours, our producers and their communities are integral to the vibrancy and sustainability of our business.

We invest in our communities through our Westmorland Community Fund,

A grant-giving fund that makes available up to £100,000 per year to support local people and projects. Our support is focussed on young people because we want to help build healthy, resilient communities and bring about positive change that makes an impact on future generations.

The Westmorland Community Fund is managed for us by Cumbria Community Foundation (CCF), which works closely with us to invest in projects that meet our objectives. We are nearing the completion of a £1 million endowment fund with CCF that will generate income for grant making in perpetuity. Our Fund supports local secondary schools to extend learning and career-development opportunities to all students. It aids initiatives that provide mental health support and helps sports clubs, village halls, theatre groups and other organisations that boost emotional and physical wellbeing.

As a food and farming business we understand the positive impact of good food choices on the health of people, soil and climate.

We want to inspire the next generation to enjoy real, fresh food. Through the proceeds of our till collection boxes at Tebay Services we support local primary schools to take part in Food for Life, the Soil Association programme that promotes a healthy and sustainable food culture across schools and communities. Two of our local schools have achieved the Bronze Award and more are working towards it.

Participating schools encourage children to cook, grow and love good food by weaving activities such as gardening, cooking and farm visits into the curriculum. Many of our colleagues belong to the same school communities and they relish getting involved: sausage-making workshops held in schools by members of our butchery team are always a hit with students and teachers.

Our colleagues are encouraged to be active in their communities and one another’s communities.

They share their skills and crafts or take part in volunteer days that benefit local organisations, such as Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team.

The volunteer-run search-and-rescue charity that patrols the hills overlooked by Tebay Services is funded entirely by donations, raising almost half its annual running costs through collections in our foyers. It is one of many local groups that fundraise with us throughout the year, and we are immensely grateful for our customers’ generous support of this and other causes close to our hearts.
